Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” is the first song I remember being obsessed with. I have a simple yet vivid memory of Mom cooking dinner in the kitchen, me sitting on the wooden steps that led to the foyer, hot and muggy Floridian breeze making its way through the open back door, sweat from running around outside in the fading daylight dripping down my shins and into my tennis shoes. The stereo was humming and somewhere in the distance I could hear my sister asking if it was time to eat yet. And that’s when I heard it– the strong, staccato drum rhythm of the beginning of “Higher Love."
Every time I hear it now, I am transported back to that kitchen and that thick summer air with all my siblings and parents under one roof. We’re all older now and spread out all over the U.S., but that snapshot remains in cataloged memory and resurfaces every time Steve comes around. That’s what music can do: It can instantly take you back to a night at summer camp or the first time you drove a car by yourself or that time someone said I Love You and really meant it.
I’ve been trying to keep up with all of the new music I come across by doing a Friday Mixtape– good tunes and great memories from the week all tied up in a little playlist. There’s no real rhyme or reason to the songs, other than they’ve influenced my week in some way. Sometimes I’ll tell a story about a song or two, or sometimes it’s just good music from the week that I want to share with you. Either way… enjoy!
You can subscribe to all the Friday Mixtapes here if you ever wanted to listen to hours and hours of awesome tunes.
